Today is Earth Day

EARTHDAY.ORG’s theme for Earth Day 2021 is Restore Our Earth™, which focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the world’s ecosystems. It is up to all of us to Restore Our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it.

Here are just a few ways that we’re supporting a more sustainable environment.

Our 1000th Electric Vehicle is a large van

This week we welcomed our first large van, a Vauxhall Vivaro-e, taking Mitie us past the landmark of 1,000 electric vehicles (EV). This is the first of 655 Vivaro-e vans we’ve ordered to be delivered by the end of the year.

The van will be used by one of our frontline engineers, a former Interserve colleague. It has been specially fitted-out to make sure it can carry the weight of equipment needed while at the same time making sure the battery lasts long enough to get the jobs done.

Bin the bag

As part of Plan Zero we have pledged to reduce waste by 25% and to increase our recycling rate to 80%.

A new ‘Bin the Bag’ initiative launching next week, will help achieve both targets by removing the need for single use bin liners. This will reduce the amount of single use plastic by over 600kg.

It will also help colleagues to recycle better as the bin has three chambers including a food waste section and instructions on which items to place where so recyclable items are kept separate.

Look out for more information on the scheme after it’s been rolled out to more of Mitie’s sites next month.

No Mow May

At Mitie we are promoting Plantlife’s #NoMowMay campaign and Landscapes have asked our customers not to mow their grass in May.

Why don’t you take part too? The initiative doesn’t ask you to do much. In fact, it asks you to not do anything at all…

You just need to let the wildflowers in your lawn grow and keep your mower locked away for the month of May. By doing this, the flowers that can bloom, like daisies and clover, provide enough nectar for ten times more bees and other insects than a normal lawn.

What can I do?

As well as taking part in the No Mow May initiative, check out which has over fifty ideas for how you can help ‘Restore our Earth’ by doing one small ‘Act of Green’ including:

  • Carry re-usable cutlery with you instead of using disposables when you buy lunch out
  • Always take a re-usable bag when you go shopping
  • Make your next meal plant-based and try to reduce the amount of animal products you consume
  • Pick up any litter you see when you’re out on a walk
  • Start composting at home
  • Don’t buy drinks in plastic bottles – take a re-usable container with you

Tweet @mitie using the hashtags #earthday or #restoreourearth to share your Act of Green with us
