Mitie’s Lee Wilson yomps for SSAFA

This August, Lee Wilson and his motorcycle group the Rejects Brotherhood climbed Mount Snowdon in aid of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. What’s already a challenging 2,936ft ascent was made even tougher with the addition of carrying 40kg in Bergen bags on their backs!

Having served 23 years in the Army himself, Lee wanted to take part in the challenge because of the support SSAFA has offered those in the military he knows and has served with. The Kent based motorcycle group just celebrated its 40th anniversary, and after each annual rally they donate money to a local charity.

Lee explains how the challenge went down…

“We drove for 9.5 hours to our accommodation for the night before a 6:30am start on the mountain. We were lucky with the weather as it had previously forecasted rain, but about ¾ of the way the winds started to pick up, blowing around 50mph. We managed to reach the summit in just over three hours where the wind got to 65mph, hoping not to get blown away as the force caught our Bergens.

“After a rest and celebratory drink, we began to descend, heading down the Llanberis track that’s 4.5 miles of loose gravel. Cramp was setting in, knees were starting to go, but we got to the bottom unscathed, though exhausted and not looking forward to the 9.5-hour minibus journey back all cramped up!

“We’ve raised nearly £2,900, excluding what we have in our collection boxes which we’ll have out on our Bike Rally.”

Lee implores anyone to volunteer when they can. “Organising or taking part in a charity event no matter how big, small or how hard it can be is a great achievement for not just yourself but for a good cause too. I would recommend anyone to take part in one.”

It’s never too early to think about next year’s event. Lee shares, “The club are considering canoeing up the Thames, cycling, or a survival week, and I believe the charity will be Homes 4 Heroes who help ex-service personnel to enjoy clean living environments.

“It doesn’t stop there either; I’m also organising for a few of us to take part in a tandem parachute jump to coincide with next year’s event.”

Best of luck Lee, we admire your dedication! You can support his fundraiser for SSAFA through JustGiving.
